The Los Rios Transfer Centers: A First Year Evaluation.
Ruden, John E.
The Los Rios Transfer Centers were established to provide adequate transfer resources, information, and intersegmental cooperation and articulation to increase the rate of transfer to four-year institutions among minority, disabled, low income, and other underrepresented students. In order to develop a profile of students who were using the centers and to identify areas for the improvement or expansion of services, questionnaires were sent to more than 1,400 students who used the centers during their first year of operation. Study findings, based on an adjusted response rate of 48.5% included the following: (1) counselor referrals were by far the most effective means of making the students aware of the centers; (2) women, particularly those in their 30's, made up the majority of center contacts; (3) males made up the majority of Asian contacts, however, among those who had transferred, Asian women clearly outnumbered Asian men; (4) ethnic minorities had better representation among center users than in the district's student population as a whole, although whites made up the majority of center contacts; (5) respondents tended to be enrolled for more units than the typical Los Rios student, and had higher rates of course completion; (6) 43% of the respondents were first-generation college students; (7) student comments strongly supported having university representatives who were specifically hired for work in the centers; and (8) those respondents who had already transferred rated their Los Rios preparation highly.
