Instructor Resource Manual for "Advance: A Guide for Improving Your Position." Understanding Yourself, Learning about Careers, Making Career Decisions, Beginning the Job Hunt, Being Interviewed and Deciding on Offers, [and] Getting along on the Job. Cooperative Education, Book 3.
Peterson, Jane
The third in a series of manuals designed for instructor/coordinators of Richland College's cooperative education seminars, this volume contains information and lists of resources to be used in conjunction with the student guide, "Advance: A Guide for Improving Your Position." Each section of the instructor manual corresponds to a chapter in the guide and outlines student objectives, summarizes the guide's content, provides exercises and quizzes, and lists additional resources. Section 1 reviews the importance of self-knowledge, methods for learning about oneself, and the development of a self-management contract. Section 2 focuses on the importance of gathering career information, acquiring job information through written resources and interviews, and ways to get necessary training. The steps involved in making a career decision are outlined in section 3. Section 4 discusses job hunting in terms of locating job openings and preparing resumes and cover letters. Topics addressed in section 5 include preparing for an interview, things to expect during an interview, closing an interview and conducting follow-up, deciding on offers, and writing a letter of acceptance or rejection. Finally, section 6 discusses getting along on the job, covering problems that may arise in the first few days of employment, characteristics of successful employees, relationships with co-workers, and good working habits.
