A study was undertaken by the Mexican American Cultural Institute at Rio Hondo College to determine the effectiveness of an in-service program to increase administrator awareness and understanding of Mexican Americans. A 50-item questionnaire sought information on knowledge of the Mexican American and of Mexican American culture; stereotypes about Mexican Americans; monolingualism and bilingualism; law and law enforcement; Anglo and Mexican American relationships; Mexican American self-determination; parents, culture, and community; opportunity in schools; and the melting pot and equality-for-all syndrome. Of the 26 program participants, 20 responded to both a pre- and post-test. Their answers were compared to those of a control group of 10 Chicano professors. Study results show that, after the program, the responses of the experimental group moved significantly closer to those of the control group on only 8 of the 50 items. The perceptions of the groups differed with regard to: (1) the meanings of "Spanish American" and "Mexican American"; (2) the role of employer-held stereotypes in retarding the upward mobility of Mexican Americans; (3) the degree to which Mexican Americans enjoy equal protection under the law; (4) Anglo perceptions of the ability of Mexican Americans to participate in government; (5) the value of school as an educational institution; and (6) the opportunity for advancement of immigrants in the United States.
