Talking about Writing: A Guide for Tutor and Teacher Conferences.
Clark, Beverly Lyon
This book is intended to serve as a comprehensive guide for those English teachers and tutors, peer or professional, who face the challenge of one-on-one writing instruction. Written in a conversational style, the guide addresses the questions of "what" and "how" to tutor, and includes numerous illustrative excerpts from the journals of practicing tutors. It is based on the idea that one-on-one instruction, a tradition as old as Socrates, has, for some time, been experiencing a revival among those involved in the teaching of writing. The emphasis on writing as a process, rather than merely a product, has helped create a need for such individualized instruction, one that must acknowledge that student writers--and their individual processes--differ greatly. Following an introduction, chapters are: (1) Setting Priorities; (2) Generating Ideas; (3) Organizing, Drafting, and Reworking; (4) Improving Grammar, Mechanics, Usage, Style; (5) Special Writing Problems; (6) Evaluating Writing; (7) Coach or Dictator?; (8) Getting Started; (9) Down to Business; (10) Constraints on Conferences; (11) Problems with Attitudes and Feelings; (12) Evaluating Tutoring; (13) Journals; (14) The Perils of Tutoring; and (15) Reaching a Broader Audience. Exercises, sample essays for evaluation, and a selected bibliography are included. (NKA)
