A handbook for instructors with the University Writing Program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst is presented. The program is part of the university's English Department. A new six-credit university writing requirement consists of a three-credit freshman writing requirement and a three-credit junior year writing requirement, both of which are described. Information is provided on: placement in writing courses for entering freshmen; rules and regulations for teaching assistantships; the course syllabus and student requirements; principles for course planning; assigning and responding to student writing; peer response groups that give student writers an opportunity to share their writing; student writing revision; a conference-centered approach to the writing class; the final examination; grading; procedures for duplicating student writing; procedures for publishing student writing; class schedules; adds, drops, and withdrawals; submitting grades; evaluation of teaching assistants; the Writing Program Resource Center; tutoring services of the university; and academic and psychological testing services.
