Fall 1975 Entering Students in Spring 1978: A Comparison of Continuing and Non-Continuing Students at the Beginning of Their Sixth Semester. Student Flow Project, Report No. 38.
Hawaii Univ., Honolulu. Community Coll. System.
This report analyzes characteristics of students who entered Hawaii community colleges in fall 1975 and re-enrolled in spring 1978 for the sixth consecutive semester, and compares these continuing students to non-continuing students in terms of sex, age at time of entry, marital status, high school background, full- or part-time status, educational objectives and programs, grade point average (GPA), and credit-completion ratios. There were statistically significant differences in continuation rates for the following characteristics: age, entry status, full- or part-time status, GPA, and credit-completion ratios in the second semester; GPA and credit-completion ratios in the third and fourth semesters; and credit-completion ratios in the fifth semester. By the sixth semester, there was no characteristic common to all seven campuses. Further, campuses differed significantly in continuation rates for the second through fourth semesters but not for the fifth and sixth. Generally, students with the highest continuation rates were over 29 years of age at entry, new students as opposed to transfers, full-time students, and students with GPA's of 2.0-3.4 and with credit-completion ratios of 1.0. The continuation rate for all campuses was 76%; however, stop-outs numbered 580, about 100 more than in the previous fall. Eight data tables are included. (TR)
