Manual of Basic Spanish Constructions: An Advanced Review.
Schevill, Isabel Magana
Departing from the prescriptive approach to teaching advanced Spanish composition and stylistics, this manual is based on the analysis of constructions and style in contemporary Spanish literature--particularly the drama. The 20 sections emphasize linguistic difficulties of a conceptual nature rather than factual information. Topics include: (1) point of view in tense and mood; (2) forms and usages of tenses; (3) nouns and adjectives; (4) articles, possessives, and demonstratives; (5) personal pronouns; (6) comparison of adjectives and adverbs; (7) irregularities in verbs; (8) special constructions and expressions; (9) uses of "para" and "por"; (10) passive constructions; (11) uses of "ser" and "estar"; (12) preterite and imperfect; (13) point of view in imperfect and preterite; and (14) seven sections on the subjunctive concerning meaning and function, noun clauses, sequence of tenses, adjective clauses, adverbial clauses, and "if"-clauses. The appendixes include coverage of basic principles of pronunciation, a supplementary verb index, and various supplementary exercises. Frequent examples in Spanish are provided with English translations. (RL)
