A Comparative Study of the Application of Learning Theories as Perceived by Faculty and Students.
Bennett, Lula M.
To test the similarity of student and instructor perceptions of the learning approaches used by particular instructors in the classroom, teachers and students (n=138) of ten social science classes at Valencia Community College (Florida) responded to a questionnaire. Items tested the instructors' application of the learning theories of Pavlov, Thorndike, Hull, Skinner, Guthrie, Tolman, and Mower. Student responses were aggregated and compared with the teacher's response to determine whether the teacher's perception of his instructional approach matched the students' perceptions. Results indicated a wide disagreement between student and instructor, and a strong alignment of instructors with the learning theories of Pavlov and Hull. A repetition of the study was recommended, to be followed by an instructor self-evaluation based on responses, and a third repetition after several semesters of teaching in which instructors could modify their classroom conduct. The questionnaire and information on its development are appended. (RT)
