President Harry Truman established the first Commission on Higher Education, which was farsighted in recognizing the vital role of two-year colleges in American higher education. The community college sector has accomplished much toward achieving the Commission's goal of access to higher education, as illustrated by efforts of professional associations and the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges.
