A follow-up study was conducted at William Rainey Harper College (Illinois) to gather information from former sociology and/or anthropology students that would be useful in evaluating the sociology/anthropology department. All 696 students who had been enrolled in the last 5 years and had taken at least three courses in sociology and/or anthropology were identified. A random sample of 300 students were surveyed by mail. Study findings, based on a 32% response rate, included the following: (1) among respondents, 63% took the anthropology and sociology courses as a general education requirement, 23% took them towards a major or minor, and 14% took them for their own personal development; (2) students who took three or more anthropology/sociology courses had higher grade point averages in their areas and were more likely to be new college students than students who took only one course in these areas; (3) the four highest rated aspects of the learning environment of anthropology/sociology courses were quality of instruction, effectiveness of teaching methods, the raising of horizons, and the fairness of teaching; (4) among students who transferred and compared their experiences at both institutions, three aspects were rated as a little better at WRHC; i.e., effectiveness of teaching methods, fairness of grading, and quality of instruction; (5) 18% of the respondents indicated that having a term paper assignment in these courses would have been helpful, and 39% indicated that it might have helped; and (6) two-thirds of the respondents provided general comments on the survey instrument, with 86% being positive in nature.
