"The Problem Iceberg" in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education: Student Explanations for High Attrition Rates.
Seymour, Elaine
Journal of College Science Teaching, v21 n4 p230-38 Feb 1992
This three-year survey of undergraduates (n=330) in science, mathematics, and engineering (SME) majors indicates that a large proportion of those who switch from SME majors acknowledge difficulties that arise from structural and cultural sources rather than from personal inadequacy. Those who persevere make effective use of situational resources and employ various strategies to tolerate difficulties. (29 references) (JJK)
