Gell, Robert L.; And Others
This document contains a descriptive analysis of the 13,984 students enrolled at Montgomery College for fall 1976, including full- and part-time, credit and non-credit, and day and evening students. Selected biographic and demographic variables were used to describe the student population. Analysis showed: (1) the mean age for all students was 25.68 years; (2) 54% were female; (3) 78% were white, 7% black, and 13% foreign-born; (4) single students outnumbered married students two to one; (5) 90% were residents of Montgomery County; (6) 18% were graduates of county public schools, 3% graduates of private schools, and 12% from parochial schools; (7) 37% were first-time entrants to the college; (8) the average continuing student had earned 19 credits; (9) 43% were non-matriculated, 42% freshmen, and 15% sophomores; (10) slightly over one-third were enrolled in general education and transfer curricula, while about one-fifth were enrolled in career curricula; (11) the modal credit-hour load was three credits; (12) younger students tended to carry heavier loads; (13) average GPA was 2.63; (14) 773 were veterans, a decline of 451 from the previous year; (15) one-fourth planned to graduate during the current year; and (16) more than two-thirds were employed. Data on student characteristics are also reported by campus and a profile of credit and non-credit community services students is included. (JDS)
