Community Employers' Evaluation of Bakersfield College Cooperative Work Experience Education Program.
Helmstedter, Warren E.
A survey of community employers (both past and present) involved with the Bakersfield College Cooperative Work Experience Education program from 1975 through 1977 was conducted to obtain some measurement of program credibility respective to the changes instituted over time. Survey instrument responses were collected from 109 (48.4% of those contacted) past employers. Fifty-nine employers felt that student/employee college course work was very relevant to their jobs; 52 indicated that the course work very much increased student value as an employee. Seventy-eight employers would hire other program students in the future. In determining whether the program improved employee job satisfaction, 22 employers decided it was most effective in reducing turnover and training costs, 36 felt it significantly effective, while 23 felt it only moderately effective and 10 felt it had a very limited effect. Fall semester 1977 employers were also surveyed by oral interviews to evaluate the job performance of 185 participating students in terms of job competence, dependability, attendance, initiative, appearance, relationships with co-workers, and job progress. Employers appeared to be generally satisfied with the program students. Specific fall 1977 employer responses (n=115) relative to various student-held positions are presented. Copies of the evaluation forms are appended. (TR)
