This collection of papers concentrates on alternate approaches to education and the necessity for considering indigenous modes of education. Seven chapters include (1) "The Early Peace Corps: A Retrospective on Cross-Cultural Learning" examines the Peace Corps as a new kind of overseas work; (2) "Analysis of Differences in Cognitive Development in Selected African and Western Societies" reviews Piagetian concepts within an African context; (3) "Language and Development in Eastern Indonesia" looks at an English program at Washington State University for Indonesian graduate students; (4) "Mexican Museums: Educational Ventures" deals with an attempt to set up a system of school museums; (5) "Relevant Education in Northern Nigeria" analyzes education in Nigeria as a result of colonial policies and describes an indigenous program, the Relevant Technology Workshop; (6) "Kitchens are for Sleeping: Anthropology and the Training of Architects" illustrates the value of anthropological studies for architects in training; and (7) "Appropriate Education as a Development Resource in Rural India" addresses the problems inherent in providing effective modern education to rural India.
