The Spring 1988 Palomar College Climate Survey: An Analysis with Comparisons to the Fall 1986 Climate Survey.
Barr, Robert
In spring 1988, a survey of the full-time employees of Palomar College (PC) was conducted to assess six aspects of the college's organizational climate: leadership, motivation, communication, decision making, rewards, and job satisfaction. Findings were compared with those from a similar survey conducted in fall 1986. Study findings, based on a 37% response rate (N=213) to the 1988 survey and a 46% response rate (N=260) to the 1986 survey, included the following: (1) the spring 1988 sample rated each of the six climate components higher than did the fall 1986 sample; (2) among both groups, job satisfaction was rated highest and decision making rated the lowest; (3) administrators rated all climate components, except job satisfaction, as more effective or satisfying than classified staff or faculty; (4) participation in or effectiveness of decision making was given the worst rating of any component by both faculty and classified staff; (5) both years "successfully meeting student needs" ranked highest and "involvement in campus goal setting" lowest among the individual survey climate items; (6) satisfaction with job security was rated and ranked high while satisfaction with salary was rated and ranked low; and (7) respondents indicated that rewards for personal and excellent performance were lacking. The survey instrument is appended. (Author/JMC)
