Intersession '78: A Report for the Flexible Calendar Project.
Harris, Howard L.
Cosumnes River College adopted a Flexible Calendar Program in 1975, reducing the traditional eighteen-week semesters to sixteen weeks and adding a three-week intersession which has been the focal point of change at the college, especially in approaches to learning and teaching. For students, the fifteen, non-instructional days allowed time to explore new courses, meet graduation requirements, or reinforce basic learning skills. For instructors, intersession permitted new teaching timeframes, and time to revise existing curricula and for developing future courses. Faculty/staff and student evaluations, involving surveys covering activities participated in (mini-courses, faculty development, etc.) and advantages and disadvantages as perceived by each group as well as suggestions for improvement, indicated overwhelming intersession success. Of the 83 faculty and staff members surveyed, 51% taught one or more of the 57 mini-courses offered, while over 50% participated in in-service and staff development activities. Over 50% of the students attending intersession participated in the survey; of these, 71% strongly agreed and 28% agreed the experience was worthwhile, and 1% expressed no opinion. Lists of instructional and staff development activities offered during intersession 1978, specific suggestions for improvement, and detailed survey responses are included. (TR)
