This paper explores the Veterans Administration (VA) work-study program and its implications for student/veterans at Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania. Unique advantages of the program include tax-free income, flexible working schedules around students' class schedules, additional study time, easy access to the office from classes, interaction with other veteran/students, and access to information about the G.I. Bill and the college. Two analyses of data for both work-study participants and non-participants were performed; independent variables examined were pre-program grade point average (GPA), age, hours worked, and motivation and need factors. Dependent variables were post-program GPA and the differences between GPA for participants and non-participants. In the first data analysis, using a correlation matrix, a high correlation between the need factor and GPA increases for work-study students was found. The second data examination, using the step-wise multiple regression analysis, showed self-motivation to be the significant factor; students with doctoral degrees as their final educational objective gained more in GPA than those aspiring to associate degrees. In addition, work-study students had significantly higher GPA's than peers not employed under the program. (Author/TR)
