A study was conducted at Skyline College (California) to identify the career planning skills needed by word processing students; to select career planning concepts appropriate for the four semesters of the college's word processing program; to match the career planning skills with appropriate secretarial courses; and to develop career infusion activities for these courses. An opinionnaire was designed to collect data from word processing graduates, advisory committee members, instructors, and counselors. Respondents identified 24 career planning skills as important to include in the word processing curriculum; these were matched with appropriate secretarial courses. The first semester courses were matched with self-awareness and self-assessment skills; the second semester courses with career exploration skills; the third semester courses with decision-making skills; and the fourth semester courses with job-seeking skills. Career infusion activities were developed by word processing instructors to provide students with a systematic career planning process while learning the skills and knowledge needed to become word processing specialists. The study report includes a review of the literature on career education, the career infusion approach, and systematic curriculum development. Appendices provide the opinionnaire, course outlines for the secretarial offerings in the word processing program, an outline of the word processing degree requirements, examples of the career infusion activities developed, and an evaluation of the career infusion model.
