Practices and Opinions Related to Follow-up Studies by Public Junior Colleges: An Empirical Study.
Deem, Thomas E., Jr.
This study proposed to identify and report current programs of student follow-up at 16 Illinois and 24 non-Illinois public junior colleges. Plans and recommendations are given for improving follow-up programs in Illinois. The author concluded that (1) the purpose of follow-up is to evaluate and improve the institution's performance; (2) responsibility for follow-up should be centralized, but faculty, students, administrators, and lay advisory committees should be involved in the process; (3) follow-up studies should be widely disseminated; (4) various methods and instruments should be used in the studies; (5) former students, employers, and administrators of senior institutions should be contacted regularly for follow-up purposes; and (6) institutions should make changes in any area wherein 10% of the respondents to the follow-up study report problems or weaknesses. The author recommends that an institution should prepare students for follow-up before they leave the junior college. They should also maintain an up-to-date list of former students' names and addresses and should carefully plan all of the follow-up studies that they conduct. (MC)
