During 1978, a study was conducted at Amarillo College (AC) to determine: (1) selected demographic and socio-economic characteristics of AC students; (2) selected academic background characteristics, AC enrollment classifications, and educational goals of students; (3) students' motivations for attending AC and for choosing their major programs; (4) students' perceptions of AC and of their chances of achieving their goals; (5) the percentage of students participating in extra-curricular activities; and (6) differences among student subgrounds, defined by curricular area, full-/part-time status, day/evening enrollment, ethnic origin, sex, and age. Information about 4,497 AC students was obtained from college records and additional information was obtained from 3,013 survey respondents, representing 76% of the sample. The study revealed that the average age of AC students was 24; that 60% enrolled on a part-time basis; that 53% were women; that over half were married; and that 86% were White. The educational levels of students prior to AC enrollment were diverse, with 9% not having a high school diploma and 9% having a college degree. Most AC students had high educational goals; 50% hoped to complete a bachelor's degree. "Low cost" and "programs offered" were the most frequently cited reasons for attending AC. (AYC)
