With the new development in instructional techniques and styles, the quantification and description of faculty workload becomes increasingly more difficulty. At the Hawaiian community colleges, certain changes were made in the methodology of computing FTE for students and faculty, and average class size. They divided the total student credit hours by 15, counted division chairmen as two-thirds FTE, and excluded certain classes such as directed study in the computation of class size. This resulted in a lower FTE for students and faculty and an increase in average class size. By comparing course registration reports, schedules of classes, and faculty-staff reports, it was determined that faculty workload has stabilized at about 16.4 class contact hours or 13.3 credit hours taught. Generally, a lighter teaching load was noted for instructors in terms of hours and faculty-student ratio. But statewide community college figures show considerable increases in all areas: number of students, faculty, courses, classes, etc. Tabular data are presented, showing general FTE information as well as more detailed breakdown for each campus in terms of subject areas taught.
