American Community Colleges and International Students: A Guide to Studying in the USA.
American Association of Community Colleges, Washington, DC.
Each year, more than 514,000 international students enroll in United States colleges and universities. This publication is intended to assist these students in the selection of a U.S. two- or four-year educational institution. It gives a breakdown of the different types of institutions and degrees offered, and presents a case for beginning studies at a U.S. community college, including the tuition savings, small class sizes, and the wide variety of programs offered. The guide offers details regarding special requirements for international applicants, including tests, transcripts, essays, and proof of financial support. Required tests can include the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and/or the SAT (Scholastic Assessment Test). The guide also provides a brief breakdown of financial considerations. Once a foreign student has been accepted into an academic program, the school will issue a Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Status, so that the student may apply for a visa. There are three types of student visas: F-1 (Student Visa); J-1 (Exchange Visitor Visa); and M-1 (Vocational Student Visa). A checklist for items that must be included in visa applications is included. The guide also offers practical advice for traveling to the United States, and discusses housing, banking, driving, and working in the United States. (NB)
