This article presents two models for creating new developmentally appropriate preschool movement programs: CHAOS (Children Helping Adults Open Senses) at Eastern Connecticut State University and "KinderPlay" at Florida International University. CHAOS and KinderPlay utilize skill themes and movement concepts as their focus and incorporate parents as the main teachers of their preschool-age children. University students, usually with majors in physical education or early childhood, serve as planners, facilitators, feedback providers, and assessors of motor skill acquisition and movement concept formation. Developmentally appropriate movement programs must consider and attempt accommodations and variations for: (a) the varying biological contributions of the child; (b) the necessity to constantly manipulate the requirements of the task; and (c) the ever changing conditions of the environment where the movement experience takes place. These are three areas to consistently keep in mind when teaching and when developing appropriate lesson plans and movement experiences for young children.
