A Cognitive Approach to Elementary School Recess
Jones, Rose B.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n2 p33-34 Mar 2005
This article talks about the Cognitive Recess Curriculum as a cognitive approach to elementary school recess. The concept of a cognitive recess curriculum is based on three research studies conducted by the author. The largest study involved over 1,564 educators (superintendents, principals, teachers K 12). It sought to determine the subjects' perceptions of recess. A similar investigation compared pre-service and in-service teachers' views of recess. The third investigation studied parents of children in first grade to learn of their perceptions of recess. The results of the three studies were used to create components of a Cognitive Recess Curriculum. In this article, the author presents four learning centers of the Cognitive Recess Curriculum, which consists of: (1) Math Center; (2) Science Center; (3) Language Development Center; and (4) Music/Art Center. Here, she also presents sample curriculum objectives.
