Designing for Learning: An Active Learning Approach
Coelho, Jeffrey D.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n6 p10-12 Nov 2005
An active learning environment is one in which students are able to "seek" out new experiences, "interpret" them, and "relate" them to previous experiences. This approach allows students to engage in independent thinking, problem solving, and guided discovery as they explore broad movement concepts. An active learning means that students are engaged with the material, skills, and activities being learned. An active learning approach to teaching helps students learn to be and stay active. The focus is on the developmental needs, interests and backgrounds of the learners, and on learning experiences rather than teaching strategies. The key to developing an active learning approach is to not only plan for effective teaching but to "design for learning." In this article, the author describes a way to plan a more active teaching approach centered on designing the learning experiences around main themes, such as setting, grouping, links, prompts, demonstrations, feedback, and reflections.
