New Dimensions in Movement and Fitness through Integration
Dean, Blair
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n4 p17-19 Jul 2005
In this article, the author presents a number of ways to integrate academic content with physical activities. Among the activities are: (1) Paint the Alphabet, where students use different body parts (arms, legs, and head) as large paint brushes to paint the entire alphabet on an imaginary canvas; (2) Sequence Race, where students are placed into groups of three. Two of the students face each other holding hands, while the third student performs a series of four movements, "Over, Around, Through, and Under", using the other two students as objects; (3) ATM, where students are formed into groups of three. Each group needs two noodles or golf tubes. The idea is to get as many objects (yarn balls, bean bags, etc.) as possible deposited into the ATM (third student) using the noodles/tubes; (4) Three Letter Word, where students are given an index card with a letter of the alphabet on it. On the command, "Three Letter Word," they try to form groups that spell different three letter words; and (5) Shower Curtain Skills, where teachers take a shower curtain liner and draw the face of a calculator. Here, students move on the mat to perform different math calculations.
