Making the Fitness Connection
Brock, Sheri J.; Fittipaldi-Wert, Jeanine
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n4 p15-16 Jul 2005
Children's fitness levels are decreasing at an alarming rate. The Centers for Disease Control has determined that approximately 33% of children do not regularly engage in vigorous physical activity (CDC, 2002). As a result, childhood obesity has increased 100% since 1980 in the United States due to physical inactivity (CDC, 2004). A well-planned and well-delivered physical education program is integral to helping children improve their fitness levels. Physical educators must help children understand the importance of fitness and give them opportunities to participate in activities that contribute to overall physical fitness. One way to accomplish this task is to provide activities that help students make the connection between fitness and fun. In other words, the curriculum should include games and activities enjoyable to students, but teachers must specifically make connections to how these activities improve students' physical fitness. The activities described in this article are examples of how to incorporate fitness and fun. (Contains 1 figure.)
