Unlock the Joy. Immediate Activity for Eager Movers
Mally, Kristi K.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n3 p12-14 May 2005
Young children come to the gym expecting to move, so when they are asked to sit and are told that they can't participate until they are quiet, they become frustrated, turned off, bored, and often upset. This consumes valuable learning time, contradicts the physical education mission, and promotes discipline problems. Instant activity, whether movement-oriented or cognitive, requires creativity, well-organized plans, adequate practice time, and consistent expectations. However, it is well worth the effort for both students and teachers. This article provides several examples of instant activities that are easy to organize and implement, and also provide valuable learning opportunities for children. The challenge is to unleash children's natural joy for movement as soon as they enter the learning environment.
