Street Wise Part 1: Promoting Safe Bicycling and Walking to School
Crider, Linda B.; Hall, Amanda K.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n3 p8-11 May 2005
If school is a child's "workplace," the daily trip to school is the child's "commute." This trip may be taken in a car or bus, but if it is taken on foot or by bicycle, it offers children multiple opportunities for regular physical activity--a vitally important benefit at a time when overweight and related disorders are increasingly common. This article discusses the health benefits of bicycling or walking to school, as well as the ways in which children can be encouraged to use walking and bicycling as safe and preferred modes of transportation. (Contains 5 photographs, 1 figure, and 20 resources.)
