Natural disasters such as the tsunami that struck southeast Asia last December 26, 2004 and Hurricane Katrina leave more than just the remnants of homes, schools, hospitals, businesses. It also leave thousands of children and youth and families bewildered and helpless, trying to figure out how to regain control of their lives. The influx of traumatized children--regardless of the causes--entering America's classrooms is increasing at an alarming rate. The purpose of this article is to describe guidelines for physical educators to use when trying to address the needs of traumatized youth. These guidelines can assist teachers in helping children that are survivors of trauma revitalize a sense of purpose and control. In particular, the authors describe four guidelines for program planning and implementation: (1) Recognizing signs of trauma; (2) Getting the right fit; (3) Empowering kids through physical activity; and (4) Seeking other support/aid.
