Reflections on Refugee Youth: Potential Problems and Solutions
Watson, Doris L.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n6 p30-33 Nov 2006
In this article, the author relates how she intervened between two of her students who have fought during their swimming activity in one of her camping classes. Sarah, the student from Sudan and involved in the fight, had accused Monique of drowning her in the swimming pool. The author relates how she explained that what Monique had done was just a game typical in the States. Sarah, being a new student in the States, was not aware of such things. The author relates that the particular event was a foreshadow of a multitude of situations that would unfold the next seven years in which she would begin to work with youth programs that housed a mixture of American and refugee youth. Thus, the purpose of this article is to provide the reader with background information regarding refugee youth and to illustrate their complex social and emotional worlds. In so doing, it is the goal of this article to provide physical education teachers and youth workers with information that will better assist them as they work with these amazing youth.
