Let's Camp (To Be Better Teachers)
Kimbrough, Sandy
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n4 p40-44 Jul 2006
In this article, the author states that becoming a better physical education teacher can be challenging since it is the time for attending conferences, reading journals, and collaborating with colleagues. She added, that working at a summer camp for children provides a valuable way for physical education teachers not only to earn extra money during the summer, but also to refine and build a skill set that will enhance their teaching and benefit the students. Many colleges, universities, and school districts offer day camps and sleep-over camps during the summer that emphasize motor skill development. In this article, the author recently surveyed a small group of camp counselors and directors from two summer camps about the requirements of their jobs at camp. The results encourage and suggest that working at a camp requires implementation of many of the standards and outcomes recommended within the "National Standards for Beginning Physical Education Teachers" (BPET; NASPE, 1995/2001) and "Guidelines for Teacher Preparation in Physical Education" (NASPE, 1998).
