Integration
Kalyn, Brenda
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v16 n5 p32-36 Sep 2005
Integrated learning is an exciting adventure for both teachers and students. It is not uncommon to observe the integration of academic subjects such as math, science, and language arts. However, educators need to recognize that movement experiences in physical education also can be linked to academic curricula and, may even lead the inter-curricula approach. In this article, the author describes an example of integrated teaching based on a "space" theme. The primary goal of this unit was to deliver a series of interconnected learning experiences regarding the concept of "space." Students were provided a variety of learning experiences within several disciplines (science, mathematics, language arts, technology and computers, art, music, persona/social values, social studies, and physical education) to help them reconceptualize, reflect, and transfer knowledge about "space." Specific objectives were directed at motor learning, cognitive skill development, and creative/critical thinking. They also addressed issues of moral responsibility.
