How to Plan a Theme Based Field Day
Shea, Scott A.; Fagala, Lisa M.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n1 p32-33 Jan 2006
Having a theme-based field day is a great way to get away from doing the traditional track-and-field type events, such as the softball throw, 50 yard dash, and sack race, year after year. In a theme-based field day format all stations or events are planned around a particular theme. This allows the teacher to be creative while also adding excitement for students and the classroom teachers. There is potential each year for a new slate of events, or for introducing different twists to traditional favorites. In this article, the authors offer suggestions on how to plan a theme based field day. Sections include: (1) Choosing a Theme; (2) Creating the Events; and (3) Extending the Theme.
