Promoting Physical Activity through Physical Education: Increasing Parental Involvement
Hager, Lisa; Beighle, Aaron
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n1 p28-31 Jan 2006
This article describes how quality physical education can promote lifelong physical activity. One strategy for motivating students to be active is to get parents involved. Of the many possible sources of social support for children, parents are the most powerful. And, this remains true regardless of the age. This article provides strategies and ideas for physical education teachers to get parents, peers, family, and the community involved in helping to get children physically active as a lifestyle habit. It demonstrates how activities and events, such as a Physical Activity Calendar, not only serve to increase the physical activity levels of children, but also involve parents, possibly increasing their physical activity levels as well. The article concludes that with some creativity and hard work, physical educators can make parental involvement an integral part of a quality physical education program.
