Formalist Thinking and Language Arts Instruction: Teachers' and Students' Beliefs about Truth and Caring in the Teaching Conversation.
Pajares, Frank; Graham, Laura
Teaching and Teacher Education, v14 n8 p855-70 Nov 1998
Investigated the connection between teachers' beliefs and instructional practices when the beliefs were informed by formalist thinking related to truth and caring. Responses to a teaching problem posed to middle school students and language arts teachers indicated that teachers' instructional strategies were guided by formalist beliefs, which minimized honest feedback. Students preferred honesty, and they interpreted caring as receiving academic help. (SM)
