Engaging Alienated Youth in Physical Education: An Alternative Program with Lessons for the Traditional Class.
Halas, Joannie
Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, v21 n3 p267-86 Apr 2002
Describes a physical education program for troubled youth attending an adolescent treatment center which promotes physically and psychologically safe, fair and flexible participation, with students encouraged to play just for fun and lack of competence considered an opportunity to learn. The paper incorporates the "Circle of Courage" to show how physical education can provide a reclaiming versus alienating learning environment. (SM)
