Student Writing in Higher Education: Contemporary Confusion, Traditional Concerns.
Lillis, Theresa; Turner, Joan
Teaching in Higher Education, v6 n1 p57-68 Jan 2001
Examines "problem" of student writing in higher education from perspectives of: (1) non-traditional student writers as they attempt to engage in academic writing; and (2) a cultural-historical tradition of scientific rationality. Sees "discourse of transparency" as a common frame of reference, whereby language is treated as ideally transparent and autonomous. Illustrates how it is currently enacted and historically situated.
