Disability, Schooling, and the Artifacts of Colonialism.
Kliewer, Christopher; Fitzgerald, Linda May
Teachers College Record, v103 n3 p450-70 Jun 2001
Rejects the essentialist notion of the need to exclude children with disabilities from the school community, tracing the origin of disability segregation to the advent of western colonialism and demonstrating the symbiotic relationship between cultural and racial oppression and the oppression of people with disabilities. The paper strongly recommends the inclusion of disability issues within postcolonial educational frameworks. (SM)
