Teachers College Record, v105 n8 p1521-1558 Oct 2003
Investigated mathematics teacher practices that contributed to classroom psychological environments on the first days of school. Student and teacher data indicated that teachers' early classroom environments were either: supportive, nonsupportive, or ambiguous. Teachers' motivational and organizational discourse patterns near the end of the year were consistent with messages expressed at the beginning of the year. Students from supportive classrooms reported less mathematics avoidance than students in ambiguous/nonsupportive classrooms. (SM)
