Examines the gendered construction of the modern teacher and the educational concerns about gender dualisms within "teacher professionalism." Illustrates how rational and instrumental notions of teaching frame the conditions of women teachers' work. Concludes by presenting an alternative conceptual framework for assessing the gendered nature of identity formation in teaching. (CMK)
