"School to Career" and Social Studies: Making the Connection
Hembacher, Diane; Okada, Doris; Richardson, Terry
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v16 n4 p20-23 Mar-Apr 2004
School to Career is part of a national initiative to help students make connections between the content, skills, and concepts they are learning in the classroom and careers in the real world. School-to-career practices add relevance to the elementary school curriculum and promote engagement in learning. A key feature of many school-to-career activities is the application of subject matter, skills, and competencies to real-life situations. This article describes an example of this type of activity involving second-grade students participating in a stock market simulation: "buying" and "selling" stocks, tracking their progress, and exploring why stocks go up and down. The teacher of this class, Carol Galan, found that this type of "real-world" project provided a stimulating context for learning new concepts and applying skills across many subject areas. A sample lesson plan is provided, along with suggestions for connecting "School to Career" activities with the ten thematic strands of social studies. (Contains 17 endnotes.)
