Groce, Robin D.; Groce, Eric C.; Stooksberry, Lisa M.
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v16 n3 p28-32 Jan-Feb 2004
Several new books detailing various aspects of the lives and accomplishments of Wilbur and Orville Wright were written to mark the centennial of their famous 1902 entry into manned flight. This article describes eight books that are appropriate for early- to intermediate-level readers: (1) "Touching the Sky. The Flying Adventures of Wilbur and Orville Wright;" (2) "First to Fly: How Wilbur and Orville Wright Invented the Airplane"; (3) "Airborne: A Photobiography of Wilbur and Orville Wright"; (4) "The Wright Brothers, How They Invented the Airplane"; (5) "The Wondrous Whirligig: The Wright Brothers' First Flying Machine;" (6) "Race for the Sky: The Kitty Hawk Diaries of Johnny Moore"; (7) "The Wright Sister: Katharine Wright and Her Famous Brothers"; and (8) "My Brothers' Flying Machine: Wilbur, Orville, and Me." These books address social studies content, while also offering teachers a chance to concentrate on several reading, writing, and thinking skills that are often assessed within state-mandated standardized tests.
