Talking Circle: Creating Community in our Elementary Classrooms
Triplett, Cheri Foster; Hunter, Anne
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v18 n2 p4-8 Nov-Dec 2005
A Talking Circle incorporates traditions from various Native American tribes and represents the practice of gathering as a community to solve problems, and the practice of respectful listening. This article describes the benefits of introducing students to a Talking Circle as a way of creating community in the classroom. Having a weekly class meeting that focuses on building relationships and listening respectfully also supports the social studies curriculum goals. A Talking Circle can be a catalyst for other important aspects of the curriculum as well, including celebrating diversity, developing empathy, solving problems, and experiencing literacy.
