Bringing Cultures into the Classroom: An Invitation to Families
Pass, Susan; White, Jane; Owens, Emma; Weir, Julia
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v19 n2 p16-18 Nov-Dec 2006
As elementary teachers who teach in a variety of settings--in rural, inner city, and medium-sized town schools, these authors were concerned that their young students were coming into their classes without a real respect and tolerance for cultural differences. They believed that lessons could be taught in the primary grades that would instruct students on the wealth of diversity in America and thereby foster a respect for multiculturalism. Bringing respect for and knowledge of cultural diversity lends itself to a democratic education. This article describes how the authors first accomplished this with Asian American families, and then, later in the year, used what they had learned in their earlier efforts to work with family members from various other cultural traditions and backgrounds. In this article, the authors describe how these family members taught the students about the food, clothing, dance, and drama that was part of their cultural heritage. (Contains 7 notes.)
