Is It Time for Social Studies to Be Financially Fit?

Recent national survey results underscore the importance of economic and financial education: It appears that many Americans are making poor financial choices in such basic areas as saving for long-term goals and managing personal credit. Social studies teachers need to reexamine the contribution that the social studies curriculum can make in teaching the basics of personal finance. Among the teaching resources available is the National Council on Economic Education's (NCEE) recently released set of curriculum materials appropriate for the K-12 social studies curriculum. In this article, the author discusses the findings of national surveys on financial behavior and describes the NCEE's new set of resources.
