Integrating Children's Literature and Song into the Social Studies
Palmer, Jesse; Burroughs, Susie
Social Studies, v93 n2 p73-78 Mar-Apr 2002
Proven to be powerful learning tools, literature and song can spark students' interests and are resources with great potential for fostering learning. The use of literature and song in history classes can be a stand-alone instructional strategy or a supplement to more traditional means of teaching. Once students' interest and imagination have been captivated, they will be primed to learn the important lessons that history has to offer them. The authors first discuss the research behind the use of literature and song in the classroom, then provide a guide for learning about the Civil War using these techniques. (Contains 14 resources.)
