Artifacts Bring Grover Cleveland's Presidency to Life in the First Grade
Macken, Carol
Social Studies and the Young Learner, v21 n2 p8-10 Nov-Dec 2008
The author's school is located in Caldwell, New Jersey, which has the honor of being the birthplace of President Grover Cleveland. She wanted her students to connect that legacy to their study of the presidency. She knew that first graders are kinesthetic learners who love stories. She decided to combine excellent children's literature with historical "artifacts" so that her students would develop deeper understandings. In this article, the author describes how students as young as six years old can make real-life connections to big ideas like the duties of the president through a hands-on experience with artifacts. (Contains 1 table, 3 notes and 5 online resources.)
