Every Drop Counts: Students Develop Public Service Announcements on the Importance of Water Conservation
Stokes, Nina Christiane; Hull, Mary Margaret
Science Teacher, v69 n5 p40-41 May 2002
In today's fast-paced, technological world, it is a constant battle for teachers to find new and exciting ways to challenge and engage their students. One success story involves a unique collaborative project that focuses on water resources and conservation in which students design public service announcements (PSAs) to be produced and aired on local television. Through the project, students research local water resource issues, such as aquifer storage and recovery, desalination, water treatment, and water quality. They translate this acquired knowledge into PSAs to extend their water conservation messages to a wide audience. This article describes the collaborative project which, in addition to motivating students and engaging them in the learning process, connects them with the community and provides an invigorating change of pace for teachers.
