Wacky Machines
Fendrich, Jean
Science Teacher, v69 n5 p27-29 May 2002
Collectors everywhere know that local antique shops and flea markets are treasure troves just waiting to be plundered. Science teachers might take a hint from these hobbyists, for the next community yard sale might be a repository of old, quirky items that are just the things to get students thinking about simple machines. By introducing some "wacky machines" at lab stations as mystery objects, teachers can watch students' minds whirl into action. The idea for this quick lab sprang out of a love for shopping at local flea markets for various collections. Remarkably, a large number of science-related items can be found among another person's junk. (Contains 1 figure.)
